Bruce has been connecting youth at the edge with theatre since 1996. He established PlayWrite to pursue this passion, combining established theatre practices and neuroscience research with engaged and invested coaches to best serve the needs of youth. Bruce holds degrees from Reed College and the University of Chicago, both in Anthropology. He lived and taught in Shiraz, Iran from the late 60’s until the 1978 revolution. In 1980 he entered the culinary world in Paris, and adventures with food occupied him for the next decade and a half. In 1996, he was invited to write a play for a child in the Haven Project, and ever since has been passionately involved in connecting young people with theatre. He served as Managing Director of the Haven Project from 2000 through April 2003, and founded PlayWrite in November of 2003.
In addition to providing program support in the PlayWrite office, Elisabeth is a workshop coach, and loves working with young writers as they create characters, explore conflict, and write amazing plays. Outside of PlayWrite, Elisabeth is a writer, editor, and teacher. She holds an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Montana, and a BFA in Writing, Literature & Publishing from Emerson College. Elisabeth is excited to be part of PlayWrite's mission to empower youth at the edge.
Brooke is a writer, artist, and musician who assists PlayWrite with administrative tasks and coaches workshops. She enjoys working with youth, and igniting the fire of creativity within them. As a child and teenager, Brooke experienced many programs like PlayWrite that seek to inspire and empower young artists. Because of her past in arts education, she is enthusiastic about providing the same care and attention she received to our young writers and the program. Brooke completed her BFA in Creative Writing with an emphasis in Poetry at San Francisco State University. She truly values the positive impact that PlayWrite provides for ‘Youth at the Edge,' and is grateful to contribute to such an altruistic organization.
Ellena assists in communication strategies for PlayWrite, and likes problem solving to figure out different ways to convey messages that engage audiences. She graduated from the Honors College at Portland State University with a BS in Psychology and a minor in Sexualities, Gender, and Queer Studies. Ellena is a journalist and enjoys podcasts, photography, painting, and observing and working with youth as they experience and progress through artistic practices.
